Oscar Piastri won his second race in his career, thereby securing Mclaren's provisional first place in the Constructors' Championship.
Oscar Piastri drove the race of his life (so far), for many laps he had to defend himself against Leclerc, who was pushing him with the help of DRS, but a few laps before the end of the race he already had bad tires and Perez started to attack him from behind, in the last lap Sainz also entered the fight for second place, when Sainz got in front of Perez after the first corner, he tried to overtake Leclerc in the second corner, but he did not succeed and at the same time it slowed him down so much that Perez tried to overtake him again from the inside, but he he didn't estimate the distance between him and Sainz, which resulted in a big collision between the two drivers, who had to withdraw from the race, unexpectedly Russel, who had been driving in fifth place until now, got a third place on the podium. He thus joined Leclerc and Piastri on the podium.
For the time being, we can say that rookie Franco Colapinto also had the race of his life, who fought for the TOP 10 throughout the race and, thanks to the collision of Sainz and Perez, he appeared in a great 8th place in the race, thus scoring the first points in F1 for Argentina since 1982. His teammate Alex Albon finished in P7, overall it was a very successful race for Williams.
But Franco was not the only rookie who managed to score points today, the other one was Ollie Bearman, who replaced the "scored" Kevin Magnussen, and scored one point today, even finishing ahead of his far more experienced teammate Hulkenberg. This season he already scored points with Ferrari where he replaced Carlos Sainz in Saudi Arabia, where he finished P7, he has a total of 7 points this season.
Here in Baku, Mclaren also took the lead in the championship where he is already 20 points ahead of Redbull, Mclaren is leading the championship for the first time since Australia 2014. Lando, who started P17 after an unsuccessful qualification, got to a respectable 4th place
Mercedes luckily ended up on the podium today, but the other side of the garage will not be so happy, Lewis started from the pits due to a power unit change and struggled quite a bit in the race, so he was only P9 at the finish line.
Redbull had a foot on the podium, but after Perez's crash it didn't happen, it was surprising that Perez was able to beat Max in qualifying, the last time he managed to do that was in Miami 2023, in the race itself he clearly had a plan ahead of Max. so only P5 for Max. Perez DNF
Ferrari confirmed that they are improving their form, in qualifying Leclerc won POLE and in the race he fought for the victory until the last laps, unfortunately he missed it. at the finish he was P2, Sainz DNF after a crash.
However, F1 is already moving to Singapore, where we will race next weekend.
